- Pet food and supply pick-up
- House sitting (mail and newspaper pick-up, plant watering, trash take out, and small errands)
Below are some tips on keeping your pet safe this during the cold weather.
- Don't leave pets outdoors for long period of time. Most pet owners know that it is not a good idea to expose animals to extreme heat in the summer. It is also not a good idea to leave pets outdoors when the temperature drops. Having animals roam freely outdoors in cold weather can sometimes make animals disoriented when there is snow and ice on the ground. Also, cats that are left outdoors tend to find warmth underneath the hood of cars because of warm engines. This can cause the cat to be injured if the car is started.
- Your pet may benefit from a sweater. When walking your dog in the winter months, consider putting a sweater on him/her. Pet speciality stores sell a variety of pet clothes in many different colors.
- Be careful using rock salt and other chemicals around pets. Be sure to clean off your pet's feet and stomach after they are out in the snow. If they ingest these products while grooming themselves, they can become very sick. Antifreeze can also be a very deadly poison for animals, but has a sweet taste that may attract them. Be sure to wipe up spills and keep this product out of reach from pets. Also, consider buying propylene glycol antifreeze instead of ethylene glycol-based antifreeze, which is extremely poisonous.
Winter Walk Policies
- For the safety of your pet and pet sitter, we would like to remind you of our winter walk policies. These guidelines are especially important during extreme weather conditions.
- If temperatures drop between 20-25 degrees, the sitter will walk your dog for maximum of 20 minutes. Walking with your dog on snow or ice-covered walks is not only dangerous to your sitter (i.e.dog pulling, walking ahead), but can also be very painful on your pet’s paws.
- If sidewalks and streets become ice-covered, the sitter will only let your dog out for a bathroom break. We will then bring your pet indoors for play and attention.
- If snow falls and accumulates before you leave for work in the morning, please take time to sweep, shovel, and salt your steps and sidewalks leading to the door. Your pet sitter needs to safely enter your home without a slip or fall.
- If you need a later visit (after 5:00 p.m.)during winter, please leave your porch light on for your sitter since it becomes dark very quickly. In case of a heavy snow fall after you leave for work, please leave salt, shovel, and brooms in a visible area for your sitter. Please leave extra paper and regular towels out for your sitter on those extremely wet and snowy days. We want to respect your home and not track snow and slush on your carpet.
- Remember to purchase “pet safe”salt for your walks and driveway.
- Typically, your pet sitter will walk your pet on rainy days. However, if there is a heavy downpour, we will allow your dog outdoors for a bathroom break and bring it back
